How to Make UGC That Doesn't Feel Like a Cheap Ad

UGC is powerful, but only if it feels authentic. If you are feeding creators rigid scripts, you are doing it wrong.

Key Strategic Insight

UGC is powerful, but only if it feels authentic. If you are feeding creators rigid scripts, you are doing it wrong.

User Generated Content (UGC) is undoubtedly the golden child of modern digital marketing. When executed correctly, it drives massive conversions by leveraging peer-to-peer social proof. But unfortunately, the vast majority of brands completely ruin their UGC campaigns before the camera even starts rolling. How? By handing the creator a rigid, corporate, bullet-pointed script that forces them to sound like a late-night TV infomercial.

The entire foundational concept of UGC is authenticity. It is supposed to look like a real person sharing a real experience in their messy bedroom or everyday environment. When a creator sounds like they are reading a teleprompter, using unnatural corporate buzzwords, the audience's internal alarm bells ring immediately. In today's hyper-saturated media landscape, consumers have developed an incredibly strong, split-second radar for inauthentic advertisements. They will swipe away in milliseconds.

"If you want a highly produced, perfectly scripted video, hire an actor. If you want UGC, you must surrender creative control."

So, what is the right approach? At our agency, we refuse to write word-for-word scripts for UGC creators. Instead, we provide them with a "Concept Brief." We clearly communicate the core problem the product solves, the 2-3 key value propositions, the visual constraints, and then—crucially—we step back.

We actively encourage them to use their own everyday slang, their own unpolished filming style, and their own narrative structure. Yes, it feels incredibly scary for a brand manager to let go of tight creative control. The final video might have a slight stutter, the lighting might not be cinematic, and the phrasing might be casual. But that raw, slightly unpolished reality is exactly why it works. An authentic, messy UGC video will consistently outperform a sterile, studio-shot commercial when it comes to social media conversions. Trust the creators to do what they do best: relate to their audience.
